What to wear in Morocco: A girls packing guide by Dream Life Getaway🌞🌴🌺

Before my first time in Morocco, I remember overthinking this sooo much.

Can I wear shorts? Do I need to fully cover up? Is it disrespectful to wear crop tops? Will I feel uncomfortable? Soooo, I understand the confusion and the need to know a little more about the culture before starting to pack your suitcase (or backpack!)

And honestly… after spending so much time living and hosting trips on the coast of Morocco, I realized the answer is a lot more nuanced than what people online sometimes make it sound like.

Morocco is such a beautiful and diverse country, and what’s considered normal to wear really depends on where you are. Life in a small surf town on the coast feels completely different from somewhere like Marrakech or a traditional Berber village in the mountains. Just like in many countries, smaller villages and rural areas in Morocco tend to be a bit more conservative in terms of culture and clothing compared to bigger cities or coastal beach towns.

So if you’re joining us in Morocco (or traveling there in general), here’s a realistic guide I wish someone had given me before my first trip 💌

Morocco is different depending on where you go

I think one of the biggest misconceptions online is that there’s one “dress code” for all of Morocco… but honestly, the vibe changes so much depending on where you are.

Our Dream Life Getaway trips are based in small surf towns on the coast of Morocco, where life feels relaxed, beachy, chill, and very surf-culture oriented. Girls often wear shorts, tank tops, dresses, matching sets, and overall people dress pretty casually with jorts and oversized T-shirts or long, flowy dresses. We usually recommend leaving more revealing items such as your micro shorts, mesh skirts, or sexy bralettes or corsets with minimum coverage at home.

If you decide to explore more rural towns in the mountains,  smaller traditional villages, or busier places like Marrakech and Fes, after your trip, you’ll notice things are more conservative there. In those places, dressing a bit more modestly feels respectful and culturally aware.

So the short answer is:

On the coast → relaxed & beachy

In the cities and rural towns → more covered & modest

What girls actually wear on our Morocco trips

In my humble opinion, Morocco has some of the cutest outfit vibes everr!!! And the good news is you don’t need a whole new wardrobe for it, most of it is just linen staples, basics, and easy pieces you probably already own.

Think linen pants, flowy dresses, oversized shirts, matching sets, swimsuits, comfy sandals, gold jewelry, salty beach hair and “I just came back from surf” energy. Also the color palette of Morocco outfits is just unbelievably chic! Sandy neutrals, creamy whites, earthy browns, faded blues, soft greens, flowy linens and sun-faded fabrics that somehow always look effortlessly beautiful against the ocean, palm trees & terracotta walls!

Linen becomes your BEST friend in Morocco. Especially if you’re exploring warmer cities like Marrakech before or after the trip. It keeps you cool while still feeling respectful and comfortable at the same time.

Most girls on our trips naturally end up wearing outfits that feel effortless, beachy, and easy to move around in, yet looking soo gorgeous. Think a tanned look, salty beach hair, oversized linen shirts after surf, a stunning matching set, and a smile that only Morocco can give you 🌴🌺

Beachwear stays at the beach

This is probably the biggest thing to know before coming. Even in our relaxed surf towns, bikinis, sheer, see through or mesh beach outfits, or walking around town half-dressed isn’t really appropriate outside the beach area.

At the beach? Completely normal.

Walking through town in just a bikini top? Not really.

Usually girls just throw on:

  • linen pants

  • oversized button-up shirts

  • a dress

  • shorts & a top

It honestly doesn’t feel restrictive at all and quickly becomes second nature.

What about Marrakech?

Marrakech is BEAUTIFUL and definitely worth visiting if you have extra time around your trip, but it’s also much hotter and more culturally conservative than the coast.

This is where I personally lean more toward:

  • long linen pants

  • maxi skirts

  • lightweight dresses

  • oversized shirts

  • covered shoulders when possible

Not because someone is forcing you, but because it simply feels more respectful and comfortable there.

Also worth mentioning, Marrakech heat in summer is NO joke, so breathable fabrics become everything.

Morocco weather: what to actually expect

Another thing people get wrong is assuming Morocco is always extremely hot.

On the coast, where our trips are based, there’s usually a really nice ocean breeze, so even in summer it doesn’t feel too hot. Winters are warm and super sunny compared to most of Europe.

That said:

  • mornings/evenings can get chilly

  • the mountains (if you’re planning to visit) can actually be cold or even snowy

  • Marrakech gets VERY hot in summer

So definitely bring layers!

What I’d personally pack for Morocco

And just a little reassurance before we get into the packing list, you don’t need a whole new wardrobe for Morocco. You’ll likely already have most of what you need, and it’s also a more sustainable way to travel by making use of what you already own and caring for our earth along the way. Plus, it’s always fun to pick up a few local pieces while you’re there, the craftsmanship is incredible, and supporting local makers adds something really special to the experience.

That said, if I had to create the perfect Morocco packing list, it would probably include:

  • linen pants (multiple lol)

  • oversized shirts

  • cute tops

  • 1 or 2 pair of jorts

  • matching sets

  • flowy dresses

  • swimsuits

  • cute surf/workout sets

  • one sweater or hoodie

  • in winter; a light jacket or fleece jacket

  • flowy dresses

  • sandals

  • sneakers

  • sunglasses

  • a tote bag for beach days

  • a hat

  • a beach towel that could also work as a cover-up scarf

  • lots of jewelry to spice up the outfits

Comfort is honestly key.

Final thoughts 💌

Morocco is shaped by its culture which might be different from yours, but once you lean into it, you see the beauty everywhere; in the textiles, the colors, the ceramics, the carpets, the craftsmanship, and the way life is expressed through detail.

The ocean, the mint teas after surf, the colorful markets, the slow mornings, the orange sunsets, and long dinners on the rooftop with the girls… it’s hard not to fall in love with it <3

As long as you travel with curiosity, respect, openness, and awareness of the local culture, you’ll absolutely love it here.

Also… pack the linen pants (yes, for the 30th time in this writing).

But trust me on that one 💃🏻🐚⭐
